Mikumi National Park sits perfectly positioned along Tanzania's main highway, making it the country's most accessible wilderness destination. This park became Tanzania's fourth largest national park and serves as the gateway to southern Tanzania's amazing wildlife circuit. The park connects directly to the massive Selous ecosystem, creating one of Africa's largest wildlife areas. What started as a remote destination transformed when the modern highway opened, bringing this incredible park within easy reach of Dar es Salaam.
The heart of Mikumi is the vast Mkata floodplain, often compared to the famous Serengeti for its open grasslands and wildlife abundance. Surrounded by the dramatic Uluguru Mountains to the east and rolling hills on all sides, the park offers stunning landscapes that change from wide-open plains to thick woodlands. During dry season, massive herds gather around permanent water sources, creating some of Tanzania's best wildlife viewing outside the northern circuit.
