Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected game reserve on the African continent covering an area of 54,600 square kilometers, making it twice the size of Serengeti and three times larger than South Africa's Kruger National Park. This reserve was named after Frederick Selous Courtney who was a great Hunter and explorer and was established in 1922, and in 1982 it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site. The northern section was recently renamed Nyerere National Park to honor Tanzania's first president.
The rivers and lakes of the Selous are the lifeblood of a park that hosts some fabulous game, including elephant, wild dog, buffalo, hippo, crocodile and fantastic prides of lion. The massive Rufiji River system creates a network of channels, lakes, and seasonal floodplains that support incredible wildlife diversity. This vast wilderness offers visitors the chance to experience Africa's last great untouched ecosystem through boat safaris, walking adventures, and game drives in complete isolation from crowds. Most of Tanzania's tourists never make it here, leaving this UNESCO World Heritage site virtually untouched for those who seek authentic wilderness experiences.
