Selous Game Reserve

Africa's Largest Wilderness Adventure

Overview

Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected game reserve on the African continent covering an area of 54,600 square kilometers, making it twice the size of Serengeti and three times larger than South Africa's Kruger National Park. This reserve was named after Frederick Selous Courtney who was a great Hunter and explorer and was established in 1922, and in 1982 it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site. The northern section was recently renamed Nyerere National Park to honor Tanzania's first president.
The rivers and lakes of the Selous are the lifeblood of a park that hosts some fabulous game, including elephant, wild dog, buffalo, hippo, crocodile and fantastic prides of lion. The massive Rufiji River system creates a network of channels, lakes, and seasonal floodplains that support incredible wildlife diversity. This vast wilderness offers visitors the chance to experience Africa's last great untouched ecosystem through boat safaris, walking adventures, and game drives in complete isolation from crowds. Most of Tanzania's tourists never make it here, leaving this UNESCO World Heritage site virtually untouched for those who seek authentic wilderness experiences.

Psst...

The best time for a boat safari in Nyerere is during the dry season which is experienced from June to October. During the dry season many animals can be seen along the banks of the River Rufiji. Experience an exciting 2-3 hours private boat trip along river rufiji as well as the lakes of selous, during which you can see some of the wildlife found here such as the hippos, crocodiles and over 40 different bird species.

Safari Experiences in Selous Game Reserve

“Excellent guides who not only know how to guide a raft through the rapids, but can explain the geology and the history of the area. This trip gives you the opportunity to see a part of Dinosaur National Monument that most people never get to see”

Selous Game Reserve FAQ's

They are the same area with different names and management. The northern section was renamed Nyerere National Park in 2019 to honor Tanzania's first president, while the southern section keeps the Selous name. Most tourist activities happen in the Nyerere section, which offers the same incredible wilderness experiences Selous was famous for.
Selous is twice the size of Serengeti with far fewer visitors, creating a true wilderness experience. The park offers unique boat safaris on the Rufiji River system and multi-day walking safaris that are not available in northern parks. You will have vast areas completely to yourself with activities like fishing and fly camping.
June through October during dry season offers the best wildlife viewing when animals concentrate around water sources. Avoid March through May when heavy rains make roads impassable and some lodges close. Bird watching is excellent from January to April during the green season.
Most visitors fly in from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, or other parks on small planes that land at airstrips inside the park. Driving is possible but takes 5-6 hours from Dar es Salaam on rough roads. Flying is recommended as it saves time and gets you directly into the wilderness.
Selous works perfectly with Ruaha National Park for a complete southern circuit safari. Many visitors fly between the two parks, then connect to coastal areas like Zanzibar. Some combine Selous with northern parks, though this requires more complex logistics and internal flights.
